Legend of the Christmas Spider

The legend of the Christmas Spider is actually the start of quite a few regular traditions that are still practiced widely today. Tinsel, for example, on Christmas trees represents a spider’s work wrapping a tree in webbing.

While the Christmas Spider folktale is mostly told in Germany and Ukraine, the story itself is one that should be shared regularly during the holidays everywhere to remind us that we are only truly rich when we are surrounded by family and good people.

A poor, hardworking widow lived alone with her children. On one summer day, a pine cone fell onto the Earthen floor of the hut and took root. The children cared for the tree, expecting to have an actual Christmas tree by Christmas time. The tree grew big, and tall – but the family could not afford to decorate their tree with traditional ornaments. The children sadly went to bed and fell asleep, and when they awoke, they had found that the tree had been covered in intricate and delicate cobwebs. When they opened the dusty curtains to let in the sunlight, the rays turned the webs into gold and silver. The widow and her children were over joyed and never lived in poverty again.

To this day, it’s very much still tradition to place paper and wire spider ornaments on your Christmas tree to represent the moral of this long shared tale.
